How to Care for Your Teak Outdoor Furniture?

teak outdoor furnitureTeak outdoor furniture is very durable and rare, that is probably why it costs a little more expensive than other types of furniture. Because of this, it is probably a good idea to take care of them properly. Now, I am not saying that they are high maintenance furniture, because they aren’t. All I’m saying is that you need to take care of good investments such as this.

Teak does not need much protection because of the unique quality of its wood. When left in its natural state, it is actually virtually maintenance- free. You can leave it outside facing the changing of seasons without so much damage. Overtime though, the original honey gold color that it has will slowly change into silvery-gray. This process is called patina. The change is but aesthetic and does not change the quality of the wood.

If you want to preserve the color of your furniture, a teak sealer is recommended. The sealers contain UV protection to keep the sun from drying the oils of the wood. The depletion of the oil in the wood is the main reason why the teak outdoor furniture turns a different color. At the same time, the sealer also serves as a fungicide that prevents formation of mildew and molds that might form in the surface of the furniture. It can be applied to new teak furniture or old teak furniture after it is cleaned.

After the teak outdoor furniture is sealed, little care is required to preserve the finish. Washing it with soap and water from time to time will remove the usual soil. A teak clear coat can be applied to the furniture to improve stain resistance. Examples of possible things that could penetrate the sealer and leave stains are oils from food, coffee, wine, and some condiments.

Knowing these simple tips, you are now equipped of knowledge to protect your investment.
